制作團隊表示，他們在重新閱讀《哈利·波特與混血王子》時產生了一些好奇和啟發，原著小說裡有一段是講述鄧布利多教授帶著哈利·波特，一起觀看來自家養小精靈郝琪的回憶，描繪了赫普茲巴·史密斯以及收藏的赫奇帕奇和斯萊特林遺物的線索。這部自制電影就從這個點延伸出去的拓展劇情。早在2016年時就由獨立制片工作室「Tryangle Films」籌劃拍攝，靠著集資網站來募款籌措資金，雖然一度被擁有《哈利波特》系列版權的片商華納兄弟以侵犯權為由要求下架，但經過制作團隊多次的溝通和協商後，華納終於確定全面放行。
