芝露自從跟隨動物學家的母親，在非洲森林居住，研究如何保護大猩猩。一次意外，芝露母親誤被獵人所殺，剩下芝露與小猩猩祖相依為命。芝露長大後繼承母親保護大猩猩的志願，而同時長大的祖亦變得巨大有力，令人望而生畏。二人本來和平相處；一日，獵人見到祖身型龐大，有意捉牠研究，同行者更想將牠賣到城裡去。芝露為了避免獵人傷害祖，決定將祖交予城中的動物保護協會。當祖踏進城市，混身不自在，及後遇上當年殺死祖至親的獵人，祖更是發狂。祖奮力發抗，芝露知道祖的心意，決定協助祖一起返回森林，重過生活。
